Sinusitis: Non-surgical & Non-drug Options

sinuses of the face

Mary suffers from sinusitis since her college years. Sinus pressure, sinus headaches, allergic rhinitis describe pain conditions caused by an abnormal increase in sinus fluids and the resulting increased pressure it produces in the sinus cavities of the skull and subsequent post nasal drip. The fluids can become inflamed and produce refered headaches or become infected and the inflammation with accompanying pressure may also cause a headache and/or spread the infection in the throat and lungs.

Mary was prescribed antihistamine medications and analgesics for headaches. Imagine how desperate she was discussing the option for sinus surgery, such a radical solution when something as simple as vitamin B3 (Niacin) can dry out the membranes; or washing out (saline lavage) of the nasal pathway is a proven method of managing sinusitis. Also, Chiropractic care has been proven effective but it works differently to reduce the source of nerve irritation coming from the neck that triggers increased fluids that causes the pressure in the first place.

If you ask a surgeon don’t be surprised if you will get a surgical solution offered and if you ask a drugless, non-surgical practitioner like a doctor of chiropractor or a naturopathic doctor, you are likely to be offered a non-surgical option. Mary tried several doctors, concerned about the resommendation of continued use of medications and before being comfortable with the results experienced after undergoing Chiropractic care, the drugless option.

Well, when one kind of treatment fails to “cure” one’s symptoms then it is advised to try the next. Nasal surgery is not always best because not only is it expensive but it does not give one the full cure guarantee.
